Woodwork Department
The Woodwork Department is a good place to start your work-based training if you are "good with your hands" and interested in making things.
You will start by learning the safe working practices with hand tools, wood joints, fixings and finishings – or refreshing skills if you have had previous experience in this field. Once you are proficient at those skills you will get the opportunity to start putting them into practice with small items produced by the department and also to start to learn about the technology involved in design, cutting and production of many of the items as well as their assembly and finishing.
This can involve learning CAD, CAM and CNC, understanding carcass construction, furniture making and even boat building. You will learn to choose and use different types of wood and wood products suitable for the job and work as apprentices on projects for customers.
"I was so encouraged at being given the opportunity to work for Piers Hart & Co, it really gave me confidence. I really enjoyed the work and and they were a good lot to work with."
